The UF Advising Conference: Monday, January 30, 2017, “Advising: A Quest for Meaning!

UF Advisors,

Register now for our 2017 Advising Conference “Advising: A Quest for Meaning!” The conference will be held on Monday, January 30th  from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm in Emerson Alumni Hall. Details regarding the conference will be updated on the EventBrite link (found below) as the event approaches – stay tuned!

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2017-uf-advising-conference-tickets-30079173618

DON’T FORGET!! The conference planning committee is now welcoming proposals from advisors who wish to share their expertise. We hope you will have fun with the conference theme as it highlights not only the importance of advising as a profession, but also its exploratory nature and relation to campus-wide initiatives. The theme also encourages active dialog regarding hot topics and current issues within the field. The deadline for proposal submission is Friday, December 16th.

**The theme should not be viewed as the only lens under which proposals can be submitted. Proposals that are not directly related to the conference title are more than welcome; advising encompasses a multitude of ideas, topics, and issues so we don’t want to stifle your submissions!**

NEW THIS YEAR! We will be working to incorporate a poster session into this year’s advising conference. Presenting during the poster session is yet another great way to discuss topics and/or ongoing research. We will also be opening up this opportunity to current MS/PhD students whose professional goal is to work within advising (or related fields). Proposals that aren’t selected for a breakout session may be asked if there is an interest to modify their content into a poster session; those presenters will receive such notification with ample time to modify their presentation accordingly. We hope that a poster session will provide all attendees with an opportunity to share an even greater number of ideas.

We encourage you to forward this invitation onto other UF employees that may work directly with our student body and/or benefit from attending this event.

Both Poster Session and Breakout Session proposals should include: Presentation/learning objectives Methods of audience involvement Familiarity and background you have with the subject matter Brief description to be used in the conference program (abstract – 130 words or less)

The deadline for proposals (breakout sessions and posters) is December 16th. Please email proposals to Maureen Cox at mcox@eng.ufl.edu. Any further questions can be directed to Allison Gatsche at agatsche@ece.ufl.edu.

We look forward to seeing you in January!

Holiday Wishes to All!

All the UF students were studying way into the wee hours of the night.  Anxious to take their final exams and finish their research papers. To finish the semester strong, because their Academic Advisors coached them well!

When out of the Orange and Blue, there came such a rumpus… my word… it was Albert and Alberta dressed as Santa and Mrs. Clause!   What were they up to?    They seemed determined to help our Gators get through this finals week, and to cheer them on, and help them in the UF Quest!

And everyone in the Gator Nation knew this was going to be a process, but they had the support & encouragement of the University Advising Council!

And, there arose much optimism as the entire Gator Nation searched for meaning, as well as, celebrated the essence of the holidays together!

Wishing you all a very blessed happy holiday season!

Merry Christmas                    Happy Hanukkah                      Happy Kwanzaa

Academic Advising Center: moving into their renovated office spaces!

As many of you know, the Academic Advising Center has been temporarily relocated to the southwest corner of the Farrior Hall addition with our pre-health advising located in Walker Hall while we waited for our offices to be remodeled.  As that work is now complete, we will be moving back into our offices in Farrior Hall December 21st through 23rd

While we are remaining open and seeing students in the temporary space during this move,  computers and phones will be disconnected as they are moved and so we may be offline at times.  Additionally, there will be no pre-health advising during the week of December 19th through December 23rd.

We will be back up and fully functional by Tuesday, January 3rd in our new offices in Farrior Hall.  Please bear with us as we get things sorted out.

Soft Launch: ONE.UF degree audits for students!

At one.uf.edu, students can now click the “degree audit” tile, which will launch the application.  The data from this audit comes from the same source as the current Student Self Service and Student Admin audits.  The different look and feel accommodates students viewing the audit on their mobile devices.

Some screen shots and explanations of what students see when they launch the application are below.  If you are meeting with students, feel free to suggest that they bring up their audit on their mobile device or laptop from one.uf.edu.  Note: they have NOT removed the audit or excess hours information from Student Self Service.  Students can still view their audit and excess hours information there.  This new service DOES allow students to run audits for all of their academic programs without shopping, like advisors can currently do.

Please see Toby’s email, dated 12/8/2016 at 4:18pm. Let Toby know if you have any questions or if any of your students encounter any difficulties using the application.  He will relay the concerns to Enterprise Systems, who worked very hard to provide this service for our students. He can be reached via tshorey@ufl.edu.

Getting to know Meisha!

Meisha Wade, Journalism Advisor, and student, Eni Laska (10-2016).jpeg

*Picture of student, Eni Laska and Academic Advisor, Meisha Wade (on the right)

Although Meisha Wade got her Bachelor’s degree in Interpersonal Communication from Florida State University, she’s one of the best resources on the University of Florida campus. How did this established and accomplished woman get to where she is now? Her first job was at Hardee’s, where she worked flipping burgers to make money – she refers to herself as the “drive-thru queen.” This Gainesville native returned after her husband took a job in the area, and began her work with the University of Florida in the Registrar’s office. She then moved onto the hustle and bustle of the Admissions office, and notes that this is the best place to work if you want to know how the University works. Meisha eventually moved to advising, first for Environmental Science majors, then for engineering majors, and now for Journalism majors.

She now has three daughters, ages 24, 21 and 14, which she considers her proudest achievements. She loves spending time with her family and showing appreciation for them, which is why Christmas is her favorite holiday.

One of the most common questions Meisha gets from students is what major to choose. Her advice is to take career assessment tests and to find something that makes them genuinely happy – this means blocking out noise from parents and outside influences. Research any interests that you may have and look into potential careers. She also urges students to understand that there is not one path on their journey. There’s many different paths one can take to get to their destination. Meisha herself is a great example of this as she is currently returning back to school, this time to discover more about herself and to lead her closer to her destination.

Meisha Wade is one of the finest resources the University of Florida has to offer. She’s very knowledgeable, and super fun to boot! Go in and talk to her about your major, and then strike up a conversation about Scandal or any of the Housewives, some of her favorite TV shows!

What are some of the academic-related programs in Housing and Residence Education?

What’s new in Housing and Residence Education?

housing-res-life

We’re staying busy with our advisors-in-residence, Wanda Washington and Rachel Nelson, who are seeing more students than ever over the next month. In addition to her office hours, Wanda is also tabling in all of our first year areas over the next four weeks to answer quick questions and give advice and information to our resident-students.

Our Living Learning Communities are off to a strong start! LLC Wellness Week is coming up October 16-22, 2016. This week of programs and initiatives helps our LLC students focus on mindfulness, wellness, and self-care.

Picnic Table Advising is at the end of October! Fall PTA will be held in Graham and Jennings Areas. Please reach out to your college’s residence life liaison, or MC Jordan directly, if you’d like to participate!

chm2045-study-buddies-flyer-002The Study Buddies program is in full swing! We are excited to partner with the UF Teaching Center to offer tutoring and exam review sessions in residential areas for students in six popular classes. All students are welcome, and refreshments and study packets are provided!

We’re social! Find us on Buzzfeed, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. We are always “UFLLCs”!

Advisors are some of our favorite partners to work with, because you KNOW students. Please, reach out if you want to connect with an LLC, deliver a workshop, or participate in our Housing academic initiatives in any other way. Have a great October!
